Literature - Dystopian Horror

Music - East Asian Pop
Still Art - Magic Realism
Tender is the Flesh - submitted by Sarah Moses
If you're in the mood for an interesting
dystopian novel that touches on capitalism
with a splash of horror, this might be for you.
Imagine if every animal in existence suddenly
develops a virus that makes them inedible.
The solution? Dehumanizing a few groups...
The Florida Project - submitted by Moonee
One of our all time favorites from film maker,
Sean Baker! This brilliantly acted film begs the
question, "How do we hold onto the innocence of
childhood within such hopeless poverty?" These
kids live next to Disney World, "the happiest
place on Earth," but it feels planets away.
Is This Love - XG - submitted by Juria
I like every genre, but I find myself coming back
to XG whenever I'm in the mood for a different
flavor of pop, R&B, and hip-hop. They took the
media by a musical storm when they performed
"Is This Love" and "In The Rain" live at Coachella
2025 last month, proving their raw talents.
Autoportraitism by Mark R. Pugh - submitted by Arcadia
A striking piece of art. The haunting visual
metaphor of self-reflection and self-image
is clear, but not heavy-handed. Memory and
identity unravels in this piece, a calm
and quiet sense of unease like the ocean
deepness and its building waves.
The Road - submitted by TheBoy
Cormac McCarthy became a rather disappointing
human, but his novel about a father and son
traversing through the former United States
filled with starving bandits and ash-caked roads
with nothing but each other is a gripping tale
of both human darkness and tenderness.
Eighth Grade - submitted by Burnham
Another A24 entry! Well, we did say show off.
Middle school was an awkward time for many of
us. No matter which generation you're in, you'll
relate to this tender portrayal of adolescence
in the digital age. A sombering reminder how
hard it can be to feel so alone as a kid.
OMG - New Jeans - submitted by Hanni Pham
With this being one of the catchiest songs of
2023 and its dance routine going viral on TikTok,
it's no wonder that New Jeans rocketed in fame
among Asian communities. "OMG" became the hit
of the summer, and over the next few years it's
been hit after hit. Not a single flop.
The Wounded Deer by Frida Kahlo - submitted by Chavela
Great pick! I have this as one of my tattoos.
It just resonates. Frida's self-portrait uses
magic realism to display herself as a deer,
often the symbol of innocence and vulnerability,
with several deep wounds. There's such fragility
and pain, but she looks on with a stoic resiliency.
